Amgad El Tohamy – أمجد التهامي

Amgad El Tohamy, born in 1968 in Cairo, is a sculptor and professor of fine arts. His sculpture work focuses on creating highly abstracted architectural forms and human figures. He works with the medium of bronze.

El Tohamy started exhibiting his work in 1990, two years before he was to complete his Bachelor of Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, Egypt. In addition to regularly producing new works and exhibiting in his hometown of Cairo, he has acquired a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, and a PhD in art theory and philosophy also from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo. His PhD dissertation focused on aesthetical approaches to the employment of ready-made objects in sculpture during the second half of the twentieth century.

His abstract sculptures riff on the notion of structure, eluding a viewer’s eye and mind of a sense of the physical stability of the piece upon the viewer’s initial glance. Ribbons of metal twist and fold like a leaf in nature, but the intention is not to suggest the leaf that folds upon itself at the end of its life, but that hard cold metal can also yield softness of form and shape.

His more figurative sculptures are an exploration of the physical form of the human body with all its curves and undulating lines, expressing mental thoughts in physical form. El Tohamy captures the intensity of the human body and its movement. His work captures particular moments; his sculpture “The Confused 2” is a cheek resting on a fist, and “The Confused 1” is of shoulders slumped over in an abstract and contemporary rendition of Rodin’s The Thinker (1904), both of which suggest the very physical action of the process of deep thought.

El Tohamy dedicates much attention to delineate the face of a subject which he attempts to capture with the faintest of demarcations and lines. Facial features are not explicitly drawn, but rather, oftentimes stretched and pulled to suggest a movement and motion of action. This can be seen in his piece “Salvation” which has been executed in bronze. The face seemingly rushes with great motion vertically into space with neck outstretched and face looking skywards.

El Tohamy’s sculptural practice is a continuation of ancient sculptural practice in Egypt, relying on materials that are locally sourced to produce his works that focus on the majesty of the human figure.

بدأ التهامي رحلته الفنية عام ١٩٩٠ أي قبل إتمامه لدراسته في كلية التربية الفنية بعامين وحصوله على درجة البكالوريوس منها. وبجانب إسهاماته ومشاركاته في المعارض الفنية تمكن أيضًا أمجد التهامي من الحصول على درجتي الماجيستير ويليها الدكتوراه في الفن والفلسفة بعد ذلك.

منحوتات التهامي تجسد الجسم البشري بمنحنياته وتموجاته بشكل خاص لتعبر عن أفكاره بشكل حسي ملموس كما أنها تتناول لحظات بعينها في حياة الإنسان كتمثال “الحائر ٢” وهو يجسد الخد مستريحًا على قبضة اليد. و”الحائر ١” مجسدًا الكتفين مستلقيين في استسلام مجرد ومعاصر كتمثال “المفكر” لرودين ١٩٠٤، وكلاهما يشير إلى الحالة البدنية التي تعبر عن التفكير العميق.يولي التهامي الكثير من اهتمامه لوجه الإنسان الذي يحاول التعبير عنه دون رسم الملامح بشكل واضح ومحدد ويظهر هذا جليًا في قطعته “الخلاص” التي تم تنفيذها من البرونز ويبدو الوجه فيها وكأنه يندفع نحو السماء برقبته الممدودة لأعلى. تعد أعمال التهامي النحتية استمرارا لأعمال الفنان المصري القديم معتمدًا في تنفيذها على المواد المحلية التي يسهل الحصول عليها لتخرج أعماله الفنية التي تتخذ من عظمة الإنسان محورًا لها في أبهى صورها.
