Taha Ghobashy is an Egyptian artist, Specific Art Education faculty member and art writer. Born in Domiatt, he graduated from Domiatt University specialization in sculpture. In addition to his role as assistant professor at Domiatt University in the Faculty of Specific Art Education focusing on sculpture, he has also served in various administrative roles. His work has been exhibited in multiple solo and group exhibitions at Helwan University and Mansoura University, and he has served on many committees overseeing the curation and exhibition of students’ and artists’ work at various institutions in Egypt. He published a book titled Between Science and Art: A View on Contemporary Art.

Ghobashy has produced both figurative and abstract sculptures throughout his career thus far. Focusing more recently on the medium of wood, Ghobashy proposes new questions and considerations by which to contemplate the complexity of wood as a medium, and the possibilities that could result from working with it. His sculptures range in height from 50 to 90 cm, yet despite their size, they articulate Ghobashy’s control of the medium and his skill in eliciting assorted forms.

Ghobashy’s sculptures subtly allude to the history of sculpture both western and eastern. Specific pieces stand rigidly straight like an obelisk or sculpture of Ramses, but they are arguably also firmly placed in the current contemporary context of sculpture owing to the apparent focus on material and execution of the work. Using various types of wood throughout his practice, the objects which he produces are prompted in part by the very essence of the material itself.
