Khaled Zaki – خالد زكي

Khaled Zaki (b. 1964, Suez, Egypt) is an international artist known for his accomplished sculptures and installations. His work draws upon numerous sources, ranging from ancient Egyptian statuary, Italian renaissance sculpture, and the legacy of Egyptian modernism. He holds a Master’s in Restoration from the Faculty of Archaeology at Cairo University and studied Sculpture at the Al Khonany Museum of Art in Giza. From 1988 until 1997, Zaki followed his university education with an extended stay in Pietrasanta, a renowned medieval town on the coast of northern Tuscany also known as the “City of Artists”. It was there that he had amassed his extensive knowledge and formal skill in the processes of making sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo and the Luxor Museum, which hold between them the most important Egyptian artifacts, Zaki seeks to bring together these two great traditions, Egyptian and Italian, in his sculpture.

Zaki is the first foreign winner of the Pietrasanta Painting Prize in 1989 and, in 2000, won a competition for the design and execution of a monumental sculpture in Al Galaa Square, Cairo. Zaki’s first solo exhibition in Egypt was held at Gezirah Art Center, Cairo (2002). His work has been included in exhibitions at Safar Khan, Cairo (2002), Gallery Misr, Cairo (2014), Heist, London – UK (2015).

In 2015 he received the International Artist prize from Art Taipei, Taiwan. Followed by two solo exhibitions; ‘The Observers’ (2016) at Art Taipei and ‘Dreamers’ (2017) at X power one – Taipei .

He also participated in numerous global exhibitions and biennales, including the Egyptian commission for the 55th international Venice Biennial in 2013, where he displayed ‘Treasuries of Knowledge’ as well as Barry Freidman – The Salon : Art + Design, New York (2013) alongside renowned designer Wendell Castle. In 2017 he displays ‘The lost treasure’ project at the 7th Beijing International Biennale.

In 2018 with his new series ‘Resurrection’ Zaki brought his considerable skill as a sculptor to bear on recent events of the Egyptian revolutions, endowed with his experiences working in Pietrasanta and elsewhere. This show follows on from his earlier successful showing at Tabari Artspace ; ‘In the wind of January’ 2014 and ‘Hymns of Gold’ 2016.

In 2018 Zaki exhibited his retrospective exhibition ‘The Return’ at Ubuntu art gallery, Cairo where he held his most recent exhibition ‘Resurrection 2; Among People’ 2021.

يستلهم الفنان أعماله من موضوعات عدة كالمنحوتات الفرعونية القديمة ومنحوتات عصر النهضة في إيطاليا وتراث الفن المصري الحديث.

حصل على درجة الماجستير في الترميم من كلية الآثار في جامعة القاهرة ودرس فن النحت في متحف الخناني للفنون بالجيزة من ١٩٨٨حتي ١٩٩٧.

استكمل الفنان دراسته الأكاديمية أثناء إقامته الممتدة في مدينة بيتراسانتا بإيطاليا وهي مدينة ترجع أصولها للقرون الوسطى تقع على ساحل شمال توسكانا المعروفة بكونها “مدينة الفنانين” وهناك استجمع الفنان معرفته ومهارته الواسعة في فن النحت.

يسعي الفنان من خلال منحوتاته ولوحاته أن يمزج بين التراث المصري القديم والإيطالي فيستوحي من القطع الأثرية المصرية ما يجعل له طابعه الخاص، فهو الذي تعمق وتأمل في متاحف وآثار مصر على كثرتها.

خالد زكي هو أول أجنبي يفوز بجائزة بيتراسانتا لفن التصوير في عام ١٩٨٩. وفي عام ٢٠٠٢ فاز الفنان بجائزة تصميم وتنفيذ تمثال تذكاري في ميدان الجلاء بالقاهرة.

أقام الفنان معرضه الفردي الأول في مركز الجزيرة للفنون عام ٢٠٠٢

تم عرض أعماله في جاليري سفرخان عام ٢٠٠٢ وجاليري مصر عام ٢٠١٤ في القاهرة ولندن عام ٢٠١٥. كما فاز الفنان في عام ٢٠١٥ بجائزة الفنان الدولي من تايوان وبعد ذلك أقام معرضين فرديين “المتأملون” في عام ٢٠١٦ و “الحالمون” في عام٢٠١٧ بنفس البلد.

شارك الفنان في العديد من المعارض العالمية و البيناليات منها الملتقي المصري للدورة الخامسة و الخمسون لبينالي فينيسيا الدولي الذي شارك فيه بعمل “كنوز المعرفة” في عام ٢٠١٣. وكذلك صالون باري فريدمان بنيويورك للفن والتصميم الذي شارك فيه بأعماله بجانب المصمم المعروف ويندل كاسل. وفي عام ٢٠١٧, شارك الفنان بمشروعه “الكنز المفقود” في بينالي بكين الدولي السابع.

في سلسلة أعماله “نشور” التي أنتجها في عام ٢٠١٨, يمزج الفنان بين تأثير الأحداث الأخيرة للثورة المصرية وبين ما عاصره من خبرات عمله في بيتراسانتا وأماكن مختلفة، مستخدماً مهاراته الواسعة كنحات. ويستمد هذا العرض نجاحه من معرضي “رياح يناير” في عام ٢٠١٤ و معرض “تراتيل من ذهب” عام ٢٠١٦ في قاعة طبري للفنون في دبي

أقام الفنان معرضه “العودة” في جاليري أوبونتو بمصر عام ٢٠١٨, كما يقيم أيضًا معرضه الأخير “نشور” بنفس القاعة في عام ٢٠٢١.

تعرض أعمال الفنان في المتحف البريطاني بلندن وأيضا متحف الفن الحديث بالقاهرة، والمتحف المصري للنحت الحديث بأسوان. وللفنان مقتنيات خاصة في بلجيكا، ألمانيا. الولايات المتحدة، بريطانيا، أيرلندا، إيطاليا، المكسيك، تايوان، الكويت، المملكة العربية السعودية، عمان، والإمارات العربية المتحدة.
